Pakistan to invest $1bn in AI by 2030, PM Shehbaz announces

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday unveiled the government’s plan to invest $1 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030, calling it a major step toward building a robust digital and innovation-driven economy.

The announcement was made at the inauguration ceremony of Indus AI Week 2026, being held from February 9 to 15. According to the event’s organisers, Indus AI Week serves as Pakistan’s official national platform for artificial intelligence, bringing together policymakers, innovators, investors and technology experts.

Addressing the gathering in Islamabad, the prime minister said the proposed investment would play a crucial role in developing a comprehensive AI ecosystem across the country.

“The Government of Pakistan is committed to investing $1 billion in AI by 2030, which will go a long way in building an AI ecosystem in our country,” he said.

Outlining key initiatives, PM Shehbaz announced that an AI-focused curriculum would be introduced not only in all federally run schools but also in educational institutions across Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. He added that the programme would extend to remote areas of Balochistan to ensure inclusive access to modern skills and prepare young people for leadership roles in the digital economy.

The prime minister further revealed plans to offer 1,000 fully funded PhD scholarships in artificial intelligence by 2030, aimed at establishing world-class research capacity within the country.

In addition, the government will launch a nationwide training programme to equip one million non-IT professionals with AI-related skills, enabling them to boost productivity and improve their livelihoods.

“Pakistan is fully prepared to meet this challenge and move forward with our global partners with commitment and dedication,” PM Shehbaz said.

He added that sectors such as agriculture and mining would be among the key beneficiaries of AI adoption, stressing that empowering the youth — who make up nearly 60 per cent of Pakistan’s population — remains central to the government’s vision.
