Sindh government restores Pir Muhammad Shah as Karachi Traffic Police DIG

KARACHI: The Sindh government has reinstated Syed Pir Muhammad Shah as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Karachi Traffic Police, according to a notification issued on Friday.

The posting officially relieves Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh, DIG at Sindh’s Central Police Office Headquarters, of the additional charge of Karachi Traffic Police, effective immediately. The notification stated:

“Syed Pir Muhammad Shah … is posted as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Traffic, Karachi, relieving Mr. Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh, an officer of PSP (BS-20) Deputy Inspector General of Police, Headquarters, Central Police Office, Sindh from the additional charge of the post.”

Shaikh had been appointed as traffic police chief after Shah was removed from the position at the end of January. While the previous notification did not mention reasons for Shah’s removal, sources told Dawn that Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho had asked Shah for an explanation over alleged “misuse of authority” in the registration of a case in Hyderabad last year, reportedly carried out on his instructions.

Shah’s reinstatement marks a return to his former leadership role in Karachi’s traffic management.
