Police free driver on personal surety in DHA crash that killed delivery rider

KARACHI: Police on Tuesday released a car driver on “personal surety” a day after his allegedly reckless driving led to the death of a 26-year-old delivery rider in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), officials confirmed.

The victim, Farhan Ali, was standing with his motorcycle near a residence close to the Saba Avenue signal when a speeding car overturned and struck him, according to videos circulating on social media. He died at the scene.

South DIG Syed Asad Raza said the injured driver, identified as Hasan Banghwar, was detained and taken to Sahil police station after receiving medical treatment. He was later released on personal surety with the consent of the deceased’s parents.

Sahil SHO Hikmatullah said police had requested the victim’s parents to record a statement for the registration of an FIR. However, they informed officers that they were transporting the body to Thatta for burial and would approach the police afterward.

The official added that both the car and the motorcycle involved in the crash have been taken into custody. Investigations are ongoing, and further legal action will depend on whether the family decides to formally pursue the case.
