KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Friday that no further rain is expected in Karachi today after torrential showers battered the city a day earlier.
“There are no chances of rain today in Karachi,” PMD spokesperson Nazir Zaighum said.
The death toll linked to the rainfall has risen to six after another person reportedly died from electrocution overnight in the Gulistan-i-Jauhar area, according to rescue officials.
At least five people had already lost their lives on Thursday as heavy rain swept through the metropolis, prompting city authorities to declare a rain emergency.
Police and rescue officials said the fatalities occurred in separate incidents. Four people died from electrocution, while another person was killed after a wall collapsed during the intense rainfall.
According to the PMD, Karachi recorded a minimum temperature of 16°C on Friday, while the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 27°C and 29°C.
Humidity was recorded at 76 per cent, with easterly winds blowing across the city. The department has forecast partly cloudy skies and pleasant weather for the day.
The heaviest rainfall on Thursday was recorded in Nazimabad, which received 97.4mm of rain by 8am Friday.
Other major rainfall figures included:
- Surjani Town: 67mm
- Keamari: 66mm
- Bahria Town: 50mm+
- Orangi Town: 50mm+
- PAF Faisal Base: 50mm+
Several areas also continued to receive rain overnight.
The PMD had earlier forecast rain and thunderstorms in Karachi and other parts of Sindh from April 2 to 4 due to a strong westerly wave entering from Balochistan.
Following the heavy downpour and resulting fatalities, the city administration had declared a rain emergency.
